More Ways to Supplement Your Health This Winter

Fall and winter are a dry time of year for a lot of us. Our lips get chapped, our skin gets scaly, and even our hair can get weak and brittle! As the air gets colder, our bodies take a toll. Even more so, our moods can really spiral downward during these dark and short days! However, there are a number ways that we can help ourselves during this cold time of the year. This post will discuss a few of them to help keep you on track with your health and wellness this fall:

Drink lots of liquids. We mentioned the importance of hydration in our last post, but we want to stress the point: staying hydrated will keep all of our bodily systems functioning well. This will help our skin, hair, nails, lips, etc. to stay smooth and strong. Besides drinking lots of water, you can help keep yourself hydrated by drinking Cool Cane Juice, soups, and by eating lots of high water content fruits.

Soak up as much natural light as you can. Yes, it’s cold outside, but it’s extremely important during this time of the year to get a little dose of direct light every day. Taking even just a 10-minute walk during your workday will be beneficial. Most people with busy schedules will leave their homes before it is light outside, and then return home when it is dark. Take advantage of the small amount of daylight hours during the winter, they will be influential on your mood and health.

Protect against dry air. Make sure you dress appropriately with scarves, mittens, and hoods to protect your skin. Cold, dry air can really do a number on your skin, leaving it chapped, flaky, and even cracked if it's severely dry. If you’re still finding it difficult to keep yourself protected, a solution could be to buy a humidifier for your house to add moisture in the air.

Don’t forget to moisturize! Your skin needs all the extra help it can get during this time of the year. Find a good all-purpose moisturizer, or make your own using coconut oil and vitamin E oil. These oils can go a long way so you don’t need too much. Rub on your hands, legs, elbows, and anywhere else that you feel is lacking some moisture. Investing in some lip chap would be a good idea as well. Bees wax and other medicated lip balms are good options in the cold months.

Take a multivitamin to help keep your immune system strong. The fall/winter seasons are optimal time for colds and flus. This can mean a lot of nose blowing, and combined with the cold air can make for very dry nostrils. What to do if your nose is raw? Coconut oil to the rescue once again! Melt a little bit enough to make it very soft and translucent without it going runny. Dab a Q-tip in the coconut oil and rub on the insides of your nostrils as well as the creases on the outside of your nose. This will soothe and moisturize an irritated nose.

What are your favorite ways to keep yourself healthy during the fall/winter months? Do you have any special tips or tricks to help you fight off dryness, colds, and the winter blues?

Superhero Green Smoothie Recipe

Greens are one of the best ways to supercharge your health and deliver a high amount of nutrients in a single glass. Think spinach in liquid form couldn’t be very tasty? Think again! You can make your own delicious smoothies to your liking using a few key ingredients that will make you crave your morning green smoothies!

Green smoothies are a great way to increase your vegetable intake if you are finding it hard to get your daily servings of vegetables. If you aren’t used to consuming large amounts of raw plant food, it would be wise to take it easy at first and start by drinking small amounts at a time. The reason for this is that high amounts of raw fruits and vegetables can cause gas and bloating if your body isn’t used to it.  After your body becomes accustomed to green smoothies, you can expect to start feeling more alert, lighter, and even smarter!

So what are these key ingredients that will make your smoothies extra-enjoyable?

Besides fruits, one of the best nutrient-rich ingredients you can add to your smoothie is Cool Cane Sugar Juice! Much like coconut water, (but with a sweeter taste) cane sugar juice can add great flavor while providing more nutrients than regular-brand fruit juices. Cane sugar juice helps with digestion, lowers cholesterol, and aids people in recovering from common illnesses such as flus and colds!

Cinnamon is another tasty ingredient that has a multitude of health benefits! Along with its anti-inflammatory properties, cinnamon is loaded with powerful antioxidants, and has even been proven to help lower blood sugar levels in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Finally, bananas are great to put in your smoothie to add sweetness, but are also a wonderful alternative to dairy to make the texture creamier! Bananas are loaded with potassium, which helps your muscles recover, especially if you are participating in a regular exercise program.

Here is a Green Smoothie recipe fit to make you feel like a superhero! All you need is a blender.

Superhero Green Smoothie Recipe

[makes about 1 giant jar-sized serving or 2 regular sized servings]

2.5 cups spinach (or other green leaf of your choice)

1-2 stalks of celery

1/4 of a large cucumber

½ of a pear

1 green apple

½ of a banana

1-2 slices of pineapple

½ cup Cool Cane Sugar Juice

1 tsp of cinnamon (or more to your liking)

Put all ingredients in the blender and add 4-6 ice cubes to make the smoothie extra refreshing! Pulse, blend, and shake as needed until the ingredients become a smooth liquid. You can add more cane sugar juice or water if the mixture is too thick for your liking.

Whether your health goals are to loose weight, get more nutrients, or simply just strengthen your immune system against illnesses, green smoothies can do it all! Adding ingredients like Cool Cane Sugar Juice can make these smoothies a greatly enjoyable part of your day, rather than a health “chore” to get your servings of fruits of vegetables.
